Every cut matters. That's why we invest in tools that deliver the same standard we expect from ourselves.
At On Point Construction, the tools we bring to site aren't chosen on price. They're chosen on performance. The Festool TS 55 Track Saw is one of those tools. It's become central to how we deliver clean, accurate joinery work across our bespoke construction projects in East Devon, and it reflects something bigger about how we approach every build: precision isn't negotiable.

What makes the Festool TS 55 essential for on-site joinery?
The Festool TS 55, and its cordless counterpart the TSC 55, is a track saw designed for cutting sheet materials such as MDF, plywood, laminated boards, and worktops. Paired with a guide rail, it produces perfectly straight, splinter-free cuts that rival the output of a full-size panel saw, but with the portability to use directly on site.
For a team that prides itself on joinery-led precision and refined detailing, that distinction matters. It means we don't have to compromise on finish quality just because we're working in a client's home rather than a workshop. That hands-on versatility is a core part of how we approach building work across Exmouth and East Devon.
Why accuracy and finish quality drive our tool choices
There are cheaper track saws available. We've used some of them. But the Festool system stands apart for a few specific reasons that align directly with how we work.
Consistency across every cut. The guide rail system eliminates guesswork. Whether we're trimming a single filler panel or breaking down a full sheet of ply, the result is the same: dead straight, clean-edged, and accurate to the millimetre. On a kitchen installation or a built-in wardrobe fit-out, that consistency is the difference between a good result and a factory-quality finish.
Minimal tear-out on laminated surfaces. Laminated boards are unforgiving. One rough cut and you're left with visible chipping that no amount of edging can fully hide. The TS 55's scoring function and blade quality mean we achieve clean cuts on even the most delicate surfaces, protecting both the material and the final result.
Dust extraction that respects the client's home. When we're working inside occupied properties, which is often the case on renovation and restoration projects across East Devon, dust control isn't optional. Connected to a Festool extractor, the TS 55 captures the vast majority of dust at source. It's a small detail that makes a significant difference to the client's experience during a build.
Built for daily professional use. This isn't a weekend hobbyist tool. It's engineered for tradespeople who rely on it every day, and after years of use, it continues to deliver the same precision it did on day one. That reliability matters when your reputation depends on consistent results.
Precision cutting in practice: two recent projects
Kitchen installation in Devon
During a recent kitchen fit-out, we used the TS 55 to trim large panels and filler pieces on site. In a kitchen, every visible surface needs to sit tight against its neighbour. There's no room for gaps or uneven edges. The track saw allowed us to make precise adjustments to each panel, achieving the kind of clean, factory-quality cuts that a well-finished kitchen demands.
This is the kind of detail that separates considered craftsmanship from standard installation. It's not just about fitting units. It's about ensuring every joint, every edge, and every transition reflects the care that went into the design. That principle applies whether we're fitting a kitchen or delivering a full property renovation.
Built-in wardrobe installation in Exeter
For a bespoke built-in wardrobe project, we needed to break down large MDF sheets in a confined bedroom space. The TS 55's compact footprint and guide rail system meant we could work accurately without needing to move materials to an external workshop. Connected to extraction, the process generated minimal dust, essential when working in a finished, furnished room.
The result was a set of components cut with the precision needed for tight-fitting joinery, delivered in a way that respected the client's home throughout.
How does the Festool compare to other track saws?
We've used and evaluated alternatives over the years. Two worth mentioning:
Makita SP6000J is a solid track saw and noticeably cheaper than the Festool. It delivers good accuracy and is a reasonable choice for many applications. Where it falls short for us is in the refinement of the dust extraction system and the overall build quality. For occasional use, it's capable. For the daily demands of professional site work, the Festool edges ahead.
DeWalt DCS520 Cordless is a powerful cordless option with genuine advantages in terms of portability. However, the system precision and quality of cut finish sit slightly behind what the Festool delivers. When the standard of our finish carpentry depends on those fine margins, that gap matters.
Investing in the right tools reflects how we build
Choosing a tool like the Festool TS 55 isn't about brand preference. It's about aligning our equipment with our standards. Every project we deliver, from a house extension in Exmouth to a premium new build in East Devon, is built on the principle that precision and quality run through every stage of the process. From foundations to finishes, the tools we use are part of that commitment.
If you're planning a build and want to understand more about how we approach new projects, our recent post on the reality of building a new home in East Devon in 2026 covers the practical side of getting started.
It's a simple philosophy: if a tool helps us deliver a better result for our clients, and it performs reliably day after day, it earns its place on site. The Festool TS 55 has more than earned that place.
